Janise Yntema extends the picture plane of the work through her use of organic and industrial materials. The gessoed masonite paintings are layered with marble dust, aluminum shavings, iron powder or wood as the ground and then sanded, incised and eroded concurrently with each application of paint. The effect enlarges the field of these works which Yntema says “reference figuration and landscape but are abstract and abbreviated to encompass the initial intensity of the physical moment”
